Mary Cheney’s Wife, Heather Poe, is a Goddamn Hero

6 Jan

Lots of analysis on Liz Cheney’s failed Senate bid, most of it is boring and written by people pretending to know better…

Ultimately we don’t know whether it was the family fissure or dwindling prospects (or both) that caused her to drop her anti-gay carpetbagging bid for the Senate, so I want to focus my efforts on talking about the actual hero in all this: Mary Cheney and her wife Heather Poe.

It was the typical Cheney’s brand of consolidated political power masked as a wholesome family portrait. Pop and Mom Cheney looked on with pride as eldest daughter Liz made her bid for the Senate, and it was business as usual for Liz when she said she was for “traditional” marriage (which is a nice way of saying you’re anti-gay). She was just repeating the GOP talking point, that was all, part of me wonders if she even knew what sort of problems it would cause for her sister Mary.

It’s a real revelation to hear right-wing straight people say they are for “traditional marriage” in one dead collective voice, in one blank stare, almost as if it’s a little meaningless hum to identify party affiliation. I think very few people who say this think about the real world ramifications of those beliefs.

Enter Heather Poe, wife of Mary Cheney, and she was just not having it. Heather Poe did what most bigots fear, she took their words seriously.

“I was watching my sister-in-law on Fox News Sunday (yes Liz, in fifteen states and the District of Columbia you are my sister-in-law) and was very disappointed to hear her say “I do believe in the traditional definition of marriage.”

Liz has been a guest in our home, has spent time and shared holidays with our children, and when Mary and I got married in 2012 – she didn’t hesitate to tell us how happy she was for us.

To have her now say she doesn’t support our right to marry is offensive to say the least

I can’t help but wonder how Liz would feel if as she moved from state to state, she discovered that her family was protected in one but not the other.

I always thought freedom meant freedom for EVERYONE.”  – Heather Poe

Mary Cheney cosigned her wife’s sentiments a few minutes later. Heather Poe is something anti-gay people must fear when they go to sleep a night; a gay with a backbone. Heather Poe was up against a pretty well-established family of Republicans here, people she has had at her house, and she promptly told them to STFU.

Papa Cheney expressed surprise at Heather Poe and Mary’s candor. How could you be surprised when a gay person defends themselves after you condemn them? It just signifies that the gay “debate” has moved on, and we are under no compunction to entertain it even in the darkest corners of Republicanhood. We have homes, loves, and lives to protect, families that are every bit as deep and rewarding as conservative families, so it should not be a surprise when we defend ourselves and others from bigoted right-wing anti-gay talk.

Heather Poe is a hero, not because she caused a schism, not because she may or may not have been the beginning of the undoing of Liz Cheney’s political life, she is a hero because she spoke out. There are many people in the USA who can’t speak out due to issues of safety, most of them economic, but sometimes–sometimes you need a good reminder that rocking the boat is okay. That even right-wing political families who could probably send someone to kill you (honestly) deserve a good smack in the face. I don’t know that what Heather Poe did was calculated, she isn’t selling any book or seminars to my knowledge, and she seems very private, but kudos to her. If you can’t speak the truth to your family then speak the truth somewhere, anywhere, and do so forcefully.

You should proofread this – some references to “Mary” clearly should have been to “Liz.”

Yeah I caught a few Liz / Mary slipups in the once over, but probably missed a bunch. It’s not my fault all the Cheney’s look the same 🙂

Reblogged this on THE END. and commented:
Giving credit where credit is due: Heather Poe took a stand for herself, her marriage, her family. And it’s about time. I like to think of her as Ian McKellan’s Gandalf, facing the fire-demon Balrog on the bridge: YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!! Gandalf emerged the victor in that battle, and so has Heather Poe. Vanquishing the pathetic Liz Cheney and her sclerotic parents. If Mary Cheney had any spine at all, she would change her name to Poe and never look back at the hot, steaming mess that is the Cheney clusterfuck.

LMAo, she should take the name Poe! Exactly what I was going for here.
